Training the cerebral coherence with the S.A.N.E. method – Neuro Emotional Alignment System

Thanks to instruments such as the electroencephalogram (EEG), it is nowadays shown that the way we perceive the world and the sense we give to our experiences change our brainwaves. Our good brain functioning and our daily experience are therefore inseparable.When our brainwaves are out of balance, there are corresponding problems in our emotional health or neuro-physics. The research allowed to identify the association between types of brainwaves and emotional and neurological conditions. For example, over-excitation in some areas of the brain is linked to anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, nightmares, hyper-vigilance, impulsive behavior, anger and aggression, agitated depression and chronic nervous pain. Underexposure in some brain areas leads to some types of depression, attention deficit, pain and chronic symptoms and insomnia.

Chemical interventions such as drugs or recreational drugs are the most common methods to alter brain function which, however, have consequences for our health. On the other hand, the training of brain coherence is the least invasive method and with longer lasting effects over time. Beta brainwaves correspond to the mental-analytic (the ego), they dominate our normal waking state of consciousness when the attention is focused on cognitive tasks and the outside world. Beta is a “fast” activity, present when we are alert, attentive, involved in problem solving, judgment and decision making or engaged in mental activity. Beta is the seat of the ego, of control and competition.

Beta brainwaves are further divided into three bands:

  • Low-Beta (Beta1, 12-15Hz) is an “inactive” analytical state; watching television for example.
  • Mid-Beta (Beta2, 15-22Hz) is a state of high engagement as in a phase of analysis and learning.
  • High-Beta (Beta3, 22-38 Hz) is a highly complex thought, fast, competitive that produces fear, high anxiety or negative excitement. It is the activation of the Reptilian brain. Continual high-frequency processing is not a very efficient way to make the brain work, as it requires a tremendous amount of energy and tends to strain the body, generating symptoms over time.


Gamma brainwaves are the fastest brainwaves (high frequency, like a flute) and they relate to the simultaneous information process from different brain areas. The Gamma brainwaves transmit information quickly and silently. In fact, Gamma is the brainwave frequency with the smallest amplitude and the mind has to be quiet to access it.


Every time we think, we feel emotions and we perform behaviors, something spectacular happens inside our brain: the communication between neurons. The electrical impulses emitted by synchronizing masses of neurons that communicate with each other, create brainwaves.

Thanks to the use of the electroencephalogram that uses sensors placed on the scalp, we are able today to detect the brain activity. Brain waves are distinguished by the frequency they emit. We can imagine them as musical notes: the low frequency waves are like the sound of a drum while the high frequency waves are similar to the acute sound of a flute. Brainwaves dance by varying the frequency based on the activity we are doing.

Brainwaves are measured in Hertz (cycles per second).


Infra-Low brainwaves (Slow Cortical Potentials), are thought to be the basic cortical rhythms that underlie our higher brain functions. Very little is known about infra-low brainwaves. Their slow nature make them difficult to detect and measure accurately, therefore few studies have been done.


Delta brainwaves are slow brainwaves. They are generated in dreamless sleep and in deepest meditation. Delta waves suspend external awareness and they are the source of healing and regeneration, which is why deep restorative sleep is so essential to the healing process.


Theta brainwaves occur most often in sleep but they are also dominant in deep meditation. In theta, our senses are withdrawn from the external world and focused on signals originating from within. It is the state we normally experience briefly as we wake up or fall asleep. In Theta brainwave state we are in a dream state: vivid images, intuition and information beyond our normal conscious awareness.


Alpha brainwaves are dominant when we have silent positive thoughts, when we access intense emotions of well-being like joy or love and they are present in some meditative states. Alpha is the power of now, being here in the present. Alpha is the resting state for the brain, it is the door of the subconscious that aid learning, memory and intuition. Alpha waves help general mental coordination, calmness, care, mind-body integration, and enhance creativity.

Researchers recently discovered Gamma is highly active when in states of universal love, altruism, and the higher virtues; how they are generated remains a mystery. It is hypothesized that Gamma rhythms modulate perception and consciousness and that the presence of Gamma relates to expanded consciousness and connection with the whole. Gamma is the seat of spirituality.
