These emotions release corresponding hormones into our bodies, such as dopamine and serotonin, which promote feelings of pleasure and gratification. Positive emotions allow us to increase our creativity and intuition, in addition, they also improve our relationships and physical and mental health.

Negative emotions, such as sadness, anger, or fear, have a negative effect on our well-being. Negative emotions, in fact, trigger the release of stress hormones such as cortisol, which over time generate various physiological dysfunctions and physical and psychological problems. Chronic stress, which medicine declares to be such following a period of at least twenty-one days, weakens the immune system which in turn acts on the neurological and endocrine systems, increasing the risk of heart disease and creating mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.

Emotions inevitably influence our behaviours and choices, for example, when we are stressed or anxious, unhealthy mechanisms such as overeating, smoking or substance abuse are activated. Over time, these behaviours can lead to physical health problems and addiction.
